90% of engineering projects target 10% of our population

What if we turned this around? Instead of making high profit margins on a products marketed to 1 billion people, we make a smaller profit margin on product marketed to 6 billion people. That’s right. We have 6 billion customers out there with much greater needs. People that don’t have access to safe drinking water, that don’t have access to safe sanitation, that suffer from disease, that are refugees, that live in slums…what about these people? Do engineers have a moral obligation to contribute to sustainable development? What is their role in poverty reduction?
